Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

Very early morning run, 4 a.m., did not see another sole, dog, cat, fox, but did see 3 racoons run accross the trail in front of me.   Weird to run that early.  Also, biffed it 3 times.  Many branches accross the trail from the wind last night.   It was difficult to run the short distance rather than my normal 8.  I always struggle with this tapering stuff.

Hi Brent

Have a question, I know you said you werent doing the Alta Peruvian because the steep downhill you said gives you a pounding. So with my current pain, not sure if Ill do it. They just sent a letter and in it they recommended running in thicker shoes and not to run in flats or you could get bloody feet. What do they mean by flats - just smooth bottom shoes? Regular road running shoes wont work? I do have some thicker trail running shoes - would that be better or just wear my road shoes with a thicker sock? If I do run I dont plan on running fast (for me), maybe just do it for the miles and fun since it is paid for (although if I still have pain which right now I do) maybe Ill just watch my son. thanks for the help

Michael, they are talking about running flats worn by most of the elite runners. Most elite runners are very efficient and run very light on their feet, feet glide over the ground with almost not touching. They can get away with these shoes based superior form and techique. If you just have regular running shoes you will be fine. The issue with this race is three fold for the average runner (my opinion):

1. Toes pound the end of the shoe, may lose toenails and have bloody feet

2. This race puts much stress on the quads, your quads really feel weak after a couple of miles. If you have not done much steep downhill, another reason to not race this course. The first time I ran this race I felt like my legs were about ready to collaspe

3. Your feet could likely slide in your shoe and cause major blisters, bloody feet. If you have practiced form and are a good downhill runner you will likely have no issues.

4. Can't count, these kind of races can be an injury about to happen, stress fracture, etc. if you have not been running downhill. This course is real steep. Cheryl Harper set an 8K World Record for women on this course a few years ago.

*Note, based on the downhill of TOU and St.George, me and Sylvia have focused on downhill half marathons, Byce, Provo and Hobble creek to hopefully get our legs ready for all the downhill running. Running downhill takes practice.

I have a stretch for your hip to try, but, it is difficult to explain. Let me know what the PT says. I will find the stretch on the internet and get you the site if your PT says its related to the IT Band being tight.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Found out today that I wont be doing the Alta Peruvian 8K, my doctor doesnt want me to do it at this time and my running may be limited for awhile, have to wait until see the PT and results of a MRI, both on next Tuesday morning. Ill still go to the race to see my son run,and get my free T-shirt and have the BBQ. Im bummed out on it, as I was getting more into running, my GPS even arrived today. But I guess it isnt unexpected with the combo of my age, weight and really Im still a beginner runner. Maybe I should have checked this earlier, its been there for awhile but never really bothered me much until tackling the 3 races which maybe in hind sight I shouldnt have done but I cant change that. Just hoping for positive results on Tuesday so I can continue at least to some degree, but Im guessing my running may be more limited for awhile.

Im curious, you and I are about same age. How long have you been running? How long have you been a serious runner and doing the level you are now?
