Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

An another adventure - first time running the half marathon, knew what to expect having ran the full a few times.   A funny thing happened on the way to the race.

Chip checking at the expo - checked my chip, Davey Allison, was the runner before, running buddy from work, ran the Top of Utah Marathon with him,  race morning, looking for a fire to keep warm, out of hundreds of runners, stood right behind Davey Allision at the fire, nice chat about old running times.

Bus to the start - out of several buses, me and Sylvie board, who gets on - Devine Miss Miss M, Queen Josse, her sister Ericka and LuzyLew.  Was this meant to be, the two expecting runners on board to kick my behind, well they did, 200 negative commando points for me.  Very nice chatting with these ladies on the bus and at the fire waiting for the start.

The race, lined up back with the 9 minute milers, where I should be, but, lost precious time trying to get around runners who should have been behind.  My watch time said 1:58:21 from start line to finish line, both Devine's and Sylvie's times were messed up.  My time was messed up also, we all three started out watches from start line to finish line.  It must be something wrong with the new chips on your numbers not reading when going accross the Matts.

Race Hopes - beat SL Half time, missioin accomplished, 90 seconds faster.  Really don't know how to compare the courses, more uphill at Ogden, but more downhill also.   Post knee surgery PR, really wanted to break nine minute miles, had 23 seconds to the good at the 10 mile mark, faded a bit towards the end, avg. pace. 27 seconds over, 9:02 pace.

Going up the hills towards the dam, could see Sylvie in front of me, almost caught her when she walked for a minute, she then took off and did not see her until we turned down from the dam.   Devine Miss M - passed on the dam hills, gave her a high five.  I knew her and Sylvie would be after me on the downhill, just cannot run those fast, knee issues.   Devine caught me with about a mile to go, made a couple of surges and got back on her heels, made third surge and could not be back to her.  If I had this to do over again, would have hung on her heeels as long as possible instead of making surges.  On the third surge she was just running too darn fast, I would guess close to 8 minute miles.

The end - came at a good time, out of gas, no kick, hunted for Sylvie, where in the heck was she?   After looking for a couple of minutes, here she comes, I must have passed her on the narrow trail at a water stop.  I did not stop, drink, take gu - I have no problem running 2 hours without water etc. unless it is super hot.

I did not see the other girls at the end or Davey, hit the pool and hot tub, talked to the lady's (husband) she was on the news for running her 50th marathon today, we had a good chat about all the same marathons we have ran.

All in All -  happy with the post-knee PR, running on 15 to 20 miles a week, really can't expect much more.   Maybe losing a few pounds will help.

Nice job Brent! I'll give those 200 commando points back and another 200 as well for the post-surgery PR. Congrats to Sylvie as well!

GREAT race! I really didn't think I'd catch you after you left me on the hills. I was surprised to see you on the trail, but that downhill really is a killer on the knees! I never felt the ITB until just about an hour ago going down the stairs at home...yup just a nip!

I think you deserve EXTRA commando points for a post surgery PR! You stayed strong till the end, and are getting stronger and stronger with each race. Then you finished off with a long ride on the parkway! I came home and slept...well, tried for a few minutes :)

Awesome job on the race man. And even better getting in a ride afterwards. Oh yeah he is getting back in to tri shape. Awesome job.

Congrats on the post-knee surgery PR. I have no idea how people, like yourself, can go without fluids.

From Brent on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 09:42:23 from 168.178.30.194

Thanks everyone, race day can be hell and heaven at the same time, we keep coming back for more.

One comment, why I don't stop when running races, unless a marathon? I no longer have a speed card to play, only the endurance card, play what cards your dealt.

Wow- congrats on your post surgery PR.

MR had/has knee issues, and downhills are hard on him too. When most of the race is downhill, it must be double-tough. So double all those commando points.

I'm stock-piling up my cannons for all the blast offs you'll be earning on your upcoming adventures. We'll be flying the Jolly Roger high this week in honor of all the awesome race finishes & PRs from the week-end.

And then a bike ride to finish it all off? Boom! (another cannon blast)

Your starting to sound like a broken record. Every race another post PR! Keep doing that and you will have to start chasing tho old PRs again. Hey, great job my friend. Always fun to follow your progress.

From Clay on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 12:51:12 from 67.222.231.10

Awesome race Brent! A PR is a PR regardless of when you do it;) Where do they start that half, Isn't just before the big hill heading towards the dam? I ran the full marathon back in 2006, it was my first...

From Burt on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 20:56:11 from 206.19.214.144

I guess everyone was too dam fast going down those dam hills. You're still running great Brent.
