Running Accomplishments:

Stay in the game, keep in the moment - have conquered a few of the holy grails of running - sub 3hr marathon, ran Boston and qualified for Boston at Boston, 10K PR under 6 min miles, won a couple of 5Ks in my early days of running, running for 30 years and ran 39 marathons.  The transistion to the back of the pack has not been easy, but, acceptance, stay in the game, root for others, enjoy the rest of the journey.  Another off the bucket list second =  Provo Half IM -  have done 6 open water Tris and 6 pool Tris.  Gave the STG IM a good Tri, hope to take another shot at the IM.

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013 Race Plan - STG Half IronMan, Lake Mead Rage Olympic distance, STG spring relay tri, STG half marathon, STG marathon, Cozumel IM, Utah Summer Games Triathlon at Gunlock, Murray 5k with family and Utah Half Distance Triathlon, 187 mile red rock relay,  STG marathon,

*note of clarification - cross training miles from biking and swimming calculated as follows: (as someone may wonder) 20 mile an hour bike = 5 cross training miles (those not familar with a 20 mph pace, good bike effort for long distance,  swimming, convert 1 hour swimming to 5 cross training miles.  For those that do not swim much, great cardio workout.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Enjoy the Swim, Bike Run thru Life - Hope to Run a Few Races Support Sylvie - Be a good coach   - Support Jenna, Jeremy, Taylor and Bonnie - my kids are now into running, who would of thunk it.  long term goals, recover from the ankle sprain, accept was it, have fun racing, mountain biking, faster swimming.

Once a Runner (John L. Parker, Jr.)  Best fictional running book ever, a must read

Again to Carthage (John L. Parker, Jr.)  The Sequel to Once a Runner, not often a sequel compares, this one does

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running ( Haruki Murakami)  things we have may all thought, but may never blog

Roughing It - Mark Twain

Personal:

BSRools, the B stands for Brent and the S for Sylvie.  The Rools come from my personal running rools over the years: Never complain once the run starts, allways pick up the pace into the wind and always pick up the pace on a hill. If someone whines, pick up the pace.  Once a goal is set, no whining, regardless of setbacks.  We were running when running was not Kool.   Kool comes from a race story, ran my first race, 5K wearing a "beanie that had "Kool Aid Kid"

Lazy River - 90 minutes of water soaking fun.  Today was upbeat talking about different races, rating races on organization, prizes, beauty of the course, etc.  *Note, best race criteria may be different for different levels of runners.  For example, an elite runner may focus on prize money, the non-age division contender may focus on prize drawings, etc.  The criteria me, Sylvie and Colleen discussed are based on being contenders in our age division awards in most races.

Utah Race Critera, #of running shorts:  (6 possible)

1)  Certified Course, course management, no one can get lost, make a wrong turn.

2)  Beauty of the course and course layout (sharp turns negative)

3)  Age Division awards, more than ribbons

4)  Post race food

5)  Prize drawings and freebees

6) Fast Course PR Opportunity High

7)  Blogger Pasta Party

8)  Crowd Support - Cheering

9)  Quality of Race Shirt

St. George Marathon   =   8 running shorts

Ogden Marathon = 7 1/2 running shorts

Murray Fun Days 5K = 4 1/2 running shorts

Nestle Arts Day 5K = 3 1/2 running shorts

Provo River 1/2 Marathon = 4 running shorts

HobbleCreek 1/2 Marathon = 5 1/2 running shorts

Greek Festival 5k = 3 running shorts

Top of Utah Marathon = 6 1/2 running shorts

Heart of Holloday 5K = 5 running shorts

There are many other Utah races.  In general, certified, good course management and timing, something for every runner.

So, which races got the highest marks?

Hang in there on the rehab!

From Kerry on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 10:51:47

Yes, I'd like to hear more about your ratings. Glad to hear the knee is healing! You're doing all the right things.

From Kim on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 10:58:30

You are the "Upbeat" master! I decided that the beauty of the course, or even the non beauty, whether it is a race or just a run, is a very important part of running! We need to enjoy the sights and sounds a lot more as we are out and about on our 2 feet! (If there are any English teachers out there reading this, you probably cringed at that second sentence...sorry!)

From Benn on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 11:30:48

So on my ride today as I got lost in the sounds of Spring, the birds chirping, cows mooing, farmers laying fodder out, I experienced a biker's high for a few minutes (although now that I think of it I am beginning to think it could have been the sweet smell of fodder that made me loopy :-P)... then a Mack truck barrelled by and it was go time. I think we should get Howling Commando T-shirts. I think I scared the redneck off though, because I stuck with him for almost a quarter mile through the village, going 33-34 mph in a 30mph zone :) ( I know I broke the law :() . He looked in the mirror, saw me grit my teeth and stare into his eyes, and he took off like a scared monkey.

Cal, Kim, Kerry: Some of races we have rated. One race I did not race, AltaPerivian 8K, very good race, and would likely get 5 running shorts. It was not rated because we feel the steep downhill is too high of risk for injury. It is a PR course, great food and age division awards. How would you all rate the same races?

Benn, Hu Rah, you da grunt howling commando.

Brent - question for you: is the St. George shirt good? I will never forget finishing my first marathon here in Albany, NY and went to put on my hard earned long sleeve shirt and wore it proudly the next day only to have someone point out "Dude, what's MARTHON". Written in big black BOLD letters no less on my sleeve it reads Marthon :( *sigh

Kim if that was the worst thing I read, it would be a good day! But alas, I teach Sophomores. At least the year's almost over!

From Jody on Tue, May 06, 2008 at 19:57:32

I love the list - Glad to see some of my personal favorites made the list and my least favorite did not!

I liked the 2004 SGM shirts better than my 2007 shirt - just seems to be higher quality, but totally agree with SGM at the top of the list. Top-notch race management, loads of food at the finish, great medals, great shirts, etc., etc., etc. I have yet to run Ogden, but it sounds like maybe I should next year, based on your evaluation of the race. Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and take it easy once and a while.

From Kerry on Wed, May 07, 2008 at 20:05:16

I certainly agree with your rating of the races. Some race directors do really well with some aspects of the race, but drop the ball in other ways. It's a little amazing to me that some larger races can't get the distance right (like the Salt Lake Half Marathon) and others can't get the time right (like Provo Half on occasion). Those two seem to be critical, but even they can be forgiven if the course is beautiful and there's lots of good food and raffle prizes at the end :)
